Doomed to be a girl

Monday, February 19th, 2007

She is considered ill-fated right from the time of her birth. To avoid any misfortune from affecting the family she is slayed within a few seconds of her arrival. Though, determination of sex tests is illegal in India, still in rural areas, the parents bribe doctors to find out their child’s gender to kill her before her birth. She is a girl, who since time immemorial has been barred by her parents to breathe.

The recent survey on sex ratio in the country recorded at as low as 933 females per 1000 males, acc 2001 census, shows our shameful status as despite envisaging a journey to become the biggest IT country worldwide, those loathsome ancient principles are still very deep rooted in our society .

The government, though, has time and again tried its best to save the girl child in India, it has the least power to influence the age old value set up of our people. The programme, ““My strength, my Daughter”, launched late last year to encourage more parents to protect their infant daughters, did not prove to be fruitful. Instead, they were rewarded with something what made the news recently. Date, 19 Feb, 2007, Police found 390 body parts from fetuses and newborn babies — thought to be unwanted girls — buried in the backyard of the Mission Hospital in Ratlam, a town in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Alarmed by this inhuman trend, the government has yet again come up with a national proramme named as the ‘cradle’ scheme, which offers the parents to give their girl child to them instead of killing them. “ Don’t kill your daughter. The government will raise her” says Renuka Chowdhary, minister of state for women and child development. The scheme, to be implemented by the ministry of women and child development in coordination with state governments, is likely to be put in place during the 11th five-year plan as part of measures to fight the menace of female foeticide.

Like others, the scope of the programme’s success seems very narrow. Since most of the girls are killed before birth, not after birth, so, where is the option of abandoning girls if they are not born at all. Moreover, the propellers of the scheme hope that many parents might reclaim their daughters after a while, but they might be disillusioned later, as it is in rarest of rare cases that killers willingly want to become reclaimers.

Ouster of Yadav, a political game!

Ouster of Yadav, a political game!

As the pressure on Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to quit mounts higher by every passing day, he is looking for various options at his disposal to salvage his position. Ever Since the Supreme Court disqualified those BSP MLA’s who had joined Mulayam’s government, the minister seems to have been passing scores of sleepless nights. The centre government has been bustling over talks of imposing President’s Rule in UP. Salman Khurshid, Congress Chief in UP, in favor of the step , contended that it was high time they resumed law and order in the state. He reiterated that since many innocent lives have been sacrifised so far, it was time the minister sacrifised his for the betterment of the people

While the clamor over Mulayam’s dismissal is getting louder and clearer, this act might not be replete with philanthropic overtones only. As BJP Chief in UP, Kesri Nath Tripathi says “”It’s all a political game. They may appear like enemies, but behind the scenes they are friends”, this step might have initiated in the light of the ongoing election season in UP. Moreover, with the recent price rise creating a havoc in the lives of the people, the imposition of President’s rule might give the party another six months to improve its stand at the polls.

tribe.jpgIt is strange to hear that, a particular tribe in India called the Khasi tribe, hailing from Meghalaya is rewarding women with heavy cash for giving birth to as more and more babies.

The money incentive has come in picture as a move to save the tribe from extinction and not letting other settlers take over. So, to save their sinking population the chieftains of the tribe are stuffing their women’s pockets with notes to keep the so called baby making factory on the move.

Tata Steel now considers in the largest Co. of India

Tata Steel now considers in the largest Co. of India
The most thespian modification in Indian business has been the gush in objective. Take Ratan Tata, the Mumbai-based industrialist who this week won the battle to purchase Britain’s Corus Group, beating his Brazilian rival Benjamin Steinbruch in an intimately contested sale. So, it is not astounding that Tata Steel’s achievement of Corus has had a parallel collision.
After taking over Corus, now Tata Steel has the position top rank amongst Business tycoons. Reliance Industries had the position of the largest private company by sales previously but now, it’ll consider in second position after Tata Steel Co. Reliance Industries now stands 2nd position with sales of Rs 104,010 crore, as compared with Tata Steel’s sales of Rs 105,227 crore.

Of course Indian Oil Corporation is still the top position with a turnover of Rs 195,404 crore.

“Tata steel still has some way to go previous to it can lay claim to the number one position on the net profit front. That distinction goes neither to RIL nor Tata Steel but to ONGC, which had a profit of Rs 16,047 crore. The other two companies earned a net profit of Rs 10,557 crore and Rs 6,742 crore, respectively.”

“Even IOC, which enjoys a huge gap in sales between itself and the others, earned a net profit of Rs 9,920 crore. On this front, Tata Steel will find it extremely difficult to catch up with the others in the near term. In the longer run, if its profitability improvement moves for Corus work as planned, then it could give the others a run for their money on this front too.”
Congratulations Ratan Tata!!
